Be First at Rutgers

Rutgers–New Brunswick welcomes students who are the first in their family to attend college. In fact, 29% of students in last year's incoming class were first generation. We offer several programs designed to ensure the success of historically excluded, first-generation, and low-income students:

  • Student Support Services: Provides access to tutoring, workshops, and academic coaching in one-on-one and group settings.
  • Paul Robeson Success Institute: A three-day, high-impact summer experience that connects students with faculty, administrators, and students, and identifies resources to support educational success.
  • RU1st Initiative: Gain access to the RU1st transition course, academic advising and support, leadership experiences, and educational opportunity grants.
  • Educational Equity & Excellence Collaborative (E3C): Facilitates an eco-system that is committed to equitable outcomes for New Jersey’s historically excluded populations.
